Remove the front idlers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Idler - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Check the condition of all seals and of all components. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
Drain the oil from the front idler. Install the drain plug in order to keep dirt out of the front idler.

Remove bolt (1), collar (2) and the shims from bearing (3) .

Remove bolt (4) .

Remove the lock that holds the bearing in position on the shaft. Use a hammer and a punch to remove the lock.

Note: If bearing (3) can not be removed from the front idler by hand, use tooling (A) to remove the bearing.

Remove Duo-Cone seal (5) .

Remove Duo-Cone seal (6) .Note: Put identification on the seals for correct installation.
Remove bolts (7) .
Inspect seal (8). Replace the seal if the seal is damaged or worn.
Turn over the front idler. Repeat Steps 2 through 9 in order to disassemble the bottom side of the front idler.

Remove bushings (9) and shaft (10) by using a press.

Remove bearings (11) from bushings (12) with a press. Cut pins (13) so that the pins are flush with the face of the bushing. Make the face of the bushing smooth with a file.
