Illustration 1. Addition of oil hole.--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------Reference: (Service Magazine, August 8, 1977, "Changes Have Been Made To Improve The Service Life Of The Oil Pump Group and Drive Gears".)Description of Change: The reference article gave a description of the improvements made to increase the service life of the oil pump group and drive gears of D8K Tractors and 583K Pipelayers. The parts chart shows which new parts were installed at the specific engine serial number ranges. It has now been found that the new oil pan assemblies and the new oil pump group are not needed if the former parts are reworked (changed) according to the instructions that follow: 1. Use drills and a reamer of the dimensions shown in Illustration 1 to add an oil hole to the oil pan assembly for installation of the seal and ferrule. These parts are used to send oil from the cylinder block through the oil pan.2. On machines equipped with 4N8960 Pan Assemblies, machine two holes (X) as shown in Illustration 2 to permit pan adjustment. Use two 6N5068 Studs at these holes when the pan is installed.3. On machines equipped with 9S8712 Pans, the oil hole shown in Illustration 1 must be present. If it is not, machine the hole as shown in the illustration. Then machine one hole (XX) as shown in Illustration 2. Use one 6N5068 Stud at this hole when the pan is assembled to the cylinder block.4. Drill a hole at the location shown in Illustration 3 to make a modification to the oil pump. It is possible that some material in the body web will have to be ground away to get enough clearance to install the line connector. If the modifications are made to machines with engine serial numbers 17S8028 through 17S8943, order all the new parts that were added at 17S8944-up, except the 7N4311 Pan Assembly and 7N4170 Pump Group. If the modifications are made to machines with engine serial numbers before 17S8028, order all the new parts shown in the reference article except the 9S8712 Pan, 7N4311 Pan Assembly and 7N4170 Pump Group.
Illustration 2. Modification of adjustment holes.
Illustration 3. Addition of hole in oil pump body. To add the new parts to engines before serial number 17S8028, it is still necessary to have the engine removed and disassembled to the point that the former manifold assembly can be removed.
