Operation And Lubrication
The oil pump is a single section, outlet pressure controlled, gear-type pump, driven by an idler gear from the front gear of the crankshaft.The pump is bolted to the lower right front corner of the engine block.

1-Rear manifold. 2-Pressure oil manifold. 3-Oil intake manifold. 4-Drive shaft. 5-Drive gear. 6-Idler shafts. 7-Idler gears.The pump draws oil from the sump in the engine base and delivers it to the engine block for engine lubrication. The pressure regulating valve controls the oil pressure in the system. See the SPECIFICATIONS.Oil Pump Removal And Installation
Lower the oil level in the oil pan base so oil level is below the base connections of the pressure regulating valve and oil pump intake manifold.
PREPARING TO REMOVE THE OIL PUMP (D399 Engine Illustrated)
1-Water bypass tube. 2-Water inlet elbow. 3-Fuel priming pump line. 4-Fuel return line. 5-Fuel supply line. 6-Pressure oil pipes. 7-Bolts (six). 8-Bolts (four).When all lines have been disconnected and the bolts (8) removed, support the pump assembly with a suitable hoist and then remove the bolts (7). Weight approximately 125 lbs. (57 kg).Install in reverse order of removal.
REMOVING OIL PUMPOil Pump Disassembly And Assembly
1. Remove the fuel transfer pump as described in the topic FUEL TRANSFER PUMP.
REAR MANIFOLD REMOVAL
1-Bolt. 2-Rear manifold.2. Remove the cover plate from rear of the oil pump rear manifold.3. Remove the nine bolts (1) which secure the rear manifold (2) to the pump assembly.4. Inspect the bearing (3) and replace if necessary by driving the bearing out of the rear manifold (2). During assembly the manifold retaining bolts (1) should be carefully selected to be sure only the short bolts are installed in the shallow holes. On some early engines, pumps have a screen in cover assembly on rear manifold (2). Inspect and clean this screen at the time of assembly. Install a new cover assembly if the screen is damaged.5. The drive gear which is keyed and pressed onto the drive shaft (5) can be removed if necessary.6. The idler shafts (8) are pressed into the oil intake manifold (9). Inspect the shafts and manifold for wear. The shafts can be removed with a 1J6298 Bolt (7/16" NF, 31/2" long), flat washers and 6" (152 mm) 11/2" (38 mm) ID pipe.

When assembling the pump, be sure the dowels (6) on both sides of the pressure oil manifold (4) are aligned correctly.
7. Inspect the bearings at both ends of the oil manifold (9).
IDLER SHAFT REMOVAL If either bearing (11) or the bearing at the other end of the oil manifold (9) requires replacement, remove the retainer (10) and press out the bearing.8. Check all seals for damage and assemble the pump in reverse order of disassembly. Apply 8H5137 Form-A-Gasket compound on plug threads before installing them in manifold (4).
