Information:

The possible causes of this problem are listed below:
The heating element has failed.
There is an open signal wire (334-BU(Blue)) between the relay and the ECM.
There is an open return wire (975-WH(White)) between the relay and the ECM.
Signal wire (334-BU(Blue)) shorted to ground.
There is an open power circuit (wire 101-RD(Red)) between the relay and the +battery circuit.
The relay for the air inlet heater has failed.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely. This failure has the following results:
The smoke emissions will not be reduced during a cold start.
The additional heating cycles will not run when the air inlet heater switch is pressed.Note: Ensure that a CID 0168 FMI 04 (electrical system) is not active. If the diagnostic code is active, perform the troubleshooting steps for CID 0168 FMI 04 before performing these procedures. Also, ensure that the disconnect switch is OFF when the +battery connections at the relay for the air inlet heater are connected or disconnected. Test Step 1. CHECK THE INDICATOR FOR THE AIR INLET HEATER.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Ensure that the indicator for the air inlet heater on the monitoring system passes the start-up test.
Wait for two minutes.
Check the status of the indicator for the air inlet heater on the monitoring system.
Check for a diagnostic code of CID 0248 FMI 02 (data link) for MID 030 (Caterpillar Monitoring System). Expected Result:The indicator for the air inlet heater is ON. A CID 0248 FMI 02 is present for the Caterpillar Monitoring System. "SERV CODE" is showing. Results:
YES - The Indicator remains ON and the diagnostic code is active. Proceed to test step 2.
NO - The Indicator does NOT turn ON during the start-up test or the indicator does NOT remain ON after two minutes. The diagnostic code is not active. Proceed to test step 4.Test Step 2. CHECK THE RELAY FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the relay for the air inlet heater from the machine harness.
Measure the resistance between contact 1 and contact 2 at the connector for the relay. Expected Result:The resistance should not be greater than 30 ohms. Results:
OK - The coil of the relay is correct. The machine harness or the ECM has failed. Proceed to test step 3.
NOT OK - The resistance of the relay is greater than 30 ohms. The coil of the relay is open.Repair: Replace the relay for the air inlet heater.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE MACHINE HARNESS FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT.
The disconnect switch and the key start switch remain in the OFF position.
The relay for the air inlet heater remains disconnected from the machine harness.
At the machine harness connector for the relay, place a jumper from contact 1 to contact 2.
Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.
At the machine harness connectors J1 and J2, measure the resistance from J2-8 (relay signal) to J2-3 or to J1-7. Expected Result:The resistance that is measured
