248-09 Cat Data Link: Abnormal Update Rate The Machine ECM will not be able to receive proper signal information from the Engine ECM. Possible Causes and Schematics
Each Cat Data Link circuit is an input and output of select electronic control modules. The data link is designed to carry communications between the electronic control modules. The data link is not a visible component. The data link consists of internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring. The diagnostic code is caused by abnormal communications between the Machine ECM and a specific ECM module via the Data Link. The update rate is not correct. If a diagnostic code is present, correct the related diagnostic code. This failure results in events that are logged against an ECM that cannot be explained directly. The Machine ECM cannot communicate with this ECM or the ECM appears to communicate intermittently.Possible causes for an FMI 09 Diagnostic code are:
A fuse for one of the ECM modules may have failed.
The software is incorrect or incompatible for one of the modules within the data link.
The machine harness has failed.
One of the ECM modules in the data link has failed.

Cat Data Link Schematic
Troubleshooting Procedure
Prior to beginning this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in this circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure, and in good condition. Check the wiring for pinch points or abrasions. Look for and repair areas that indicate wires are exposed. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing a troubleshooting procedure.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Identify The Active DTC Code Associated With The Cat Data Link
Code present FMI 9, proceed to Test Step 2.
Begin Process for FMI 09 Troubleshooting HERE
2. Verify The Hardware And The Software Part Numbers(1)
A. The part number of the flash software for the Machine ECM.
B. The part number of all components related to the faulty Data Link Circuit.
All part numbers are correct. OK - All part numbers are correct.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - All the part numbers are not correct.
Repair: A module has the wrong part number or the incorrect flash software is installed. Replace the incorrect module with a module that has the correct part number. Flash the correct software.
STOP.
3. Check For Shorts
A. The key start switch and disconnect switch remain OFF.
B. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from all electronic control modules that use the suspect Cat Data Link.
C. At the machine harness for the Machine ECM, measure the resistance between the positive contact for the Cat Data Link. Measure the resistance of all other positive contacts used in J1 and J2 harness connectors.
D. At the machine harness for the Machine ECM, measure the resistance between the negative contact for the Cat Data Link. Measure all other negative contacts used in J1 and J2 harness
