Brake Pedal
Press the brake pedal down to slow or stop the machine.Release the pedal to release the brake.Parking/Secondary Brake Control
Do not engage the parking/secondary brake control while the machine is moving unless an emergency exists. Use of the parking/secondary brake control to stop the machine quickly from high speed will cause damage to the transmission mounted parking brake. If the parking/secondary brake control is used to stop the machine quickly from high speed, the transmission mounted parking brake must be disassembled and inspected.
Secondary Brake Engaged - Pull the lever BACK to engage the secondary brakes. The secondary brakes are fully applied when the lever reaches the stop. When the control is moved for secondary brake engagement, the transmission mounted parking brake and the wheel brakes are engaged simultaneously. Parking Brake Engaged - Pull the grip insert (1) UP and pull the lever fully BACK to engage the parking brake. In this position the transmission mounted parking brake is engaged and, on D350D machines only, the center axle wheel brakes remain engaged for parking. Parking/Secondary Brake Disengaged - Pull the grip insert (1) UP and push the lever FORWARD to disengage the parking/secondary brake.Retarder Control (if equipped)
The retarder control activates the retarder and controls the amount of retardation applied. The purpose of the retarder is to slow the machine without the need for continuous application of the service brakes. This reduces brake wear and overheating. Retarder Engaged - Pull the control progressively DOWN to engage the retarder. Increasing downward movement of the control increases the amount of retardation applied. Retarder Disengaged - Push the control fully UP to disengage the retarder.Do not change gear while the retarder is engaged.Check the transmission/retarder oil temperature gauge and indicator while the retarder is engaged. If the transmission oil overheats during retarder operation, use a lower gear next time the machine is driven down the same grade. The retarder operates in any gear. The most effective gear depends on grade and the loaded state of the machine.Gearshift Lever
This lever controls the speed and direction of the transmission. The machine has five forward gears and two reverse.Always stop the machine before changing direction.Steering Controls
Steering of the machine is controlled by the steering wheel. The machine will turn in the same direction as the steering wheel is turned. The steering frame locks must be removed before the machine can be steered. Left Turn - Turn the steering wheel in a counterclockwise direction to steer the machine to the left. The faster the steering wheel is turned in a counterclockwise direction, the sharper the left turn. Turn the steering wheel clockwise to straighten the machine. Right Turn - Turn the steering wheel in a clockwise direction to steer the machine to the right. The faster the steering wheel is turned in a clockwise direction, the sharper the right turn. Turn the steering wheel counterclockwise to straighten the machine.Supplemental Steering
Supplemental steering functions if the machine steering fails. It must only be used to steer the machine to a location where
