3. Remove bolts (3). Remove cover (4). 4. Remove magnetic filter (5) from the screen. 5. Remove filter screen (6) from the transfer gear case.6. Fasten a hoist to the transfer gears. Turn the transfer gears over and put wood blocks under the case. The weight of the transfer gears is 275 lb. (124 kg). 7. Remove the bolts that hold the cage to the transfer gear case. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws (7) to loosen the cage from the transfer gear case. Remove cage (8) and shims. 8. Remove lip seal (9) from the cage. 9. Remove O-ring seal (11).10. Remove bearing cup (10) from the cage. 11. Remove gear assembly (12) from the transfer gear case. 12. Use tooling (A) to remove bearing cone (13) from gear assembly (12). 13. Put gear assembly (12) in a press as shown. Use the press to remove shaft (14) from bearing cone (15) and gear (16). 14. Remove bolts (17). Remove baffle assembly (18). 15. Remove bearing cup (19) from the transfer gear case. 16. Remove bolt (20), washer and O-ring seal from the shaft. 17. Use a 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolt (21) to remove shaft (22) from the transfer gear case. 18. Remove O-ring seal (23) from the shaft. 19. Remove gear (24) from the transfer gear case. 20. Remove bearing cones (25) and spacer (26) from gear (24). 21. Remove bearing cups (27) and ring (28) from gear (24). 22. Remove the bolts that hold the cage to the transfer gear case. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws (29) to loosen the cage from the transfer gear case. Remove cage (30) and shims. 23. Remove O-ring seal (32) and bearing cup (31) from cage (30). 24. Remove gear (33) from the transfer gear case. 25. If necessary, remove bearing cones (34) from gear (33) with tool (B) and a press. Bearing cones (34) will be damaged if removed. 26. Remove bearing cup (35) from the transfer gear case.Assemble Transfer Gears (3F/3R)
1. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup. Install bearing cup (1) in the transfer gear case. 2. If bearing cones (2) were removed from the gear, heat the replacement bearing cones to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install bearing cones (2) on the gear. 3. Put gear (3) in position in the transfer gear case. 4. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup. Install bearing cup (4) in the cage.5. Install O-ring seal (5). Put clean SAE 30 oil on the O-ring seal. 6. Install cage (7) on the transfer gear case without shims. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 10 lb.in. (1.1 N m). Use a thickness gauge (6) to measure the distance between the cage and transfer gear case at four places next to the bolts. Find the average of the measurements. 7. Install the correct amount of shims (8) and cage (7) on the transfer gear case. The correct amount of shims is the average measurement found in Step 6
