The personality module software compensates for variations in unit injector timing and fuel discharge, so that every E-trim unit fuel injector functions as a NOMINAL injector. When manufactured, a four digit number (the E-trim code) is etched on the top surface of the injector's tappet. This four digit number designates the injector's E-trim characteristics. The E-trim code for each of the engine's unit injectors is programmed into the engine's personality module software at the time the engine is built.
When a fuel injector group is serviced (changed), the new fuel injector group's trim code must be programmed into the engine's personality module software by using the ET Service Tool calibration menu. If the new fuel injector group's trim code is not entered, the previous fuel injector group's characteristics are assumed. If a fuel injector group without a trim code is installed, enter the nominal default trim code 1100.
If it is not possible to immediately reprogram an injector's trim code into the personality module software, the engine will not be severely harmed. Although the new code should be reprogrammed as quickly as possible to optimize engine performance and prevent any long term detrimental effects.
Currently, the non E-trim fuel injector group is serviced with the non E-trim fuel injector group part number, and the E-trim fuel injector group is serviced with the E-trim fuel injector group part number. At some time in the future, when all engines have been updated with E-trim personality module software, the non E-trim fuel injector group part numbers will be canceled.
