Information:

1. There must be a minimum radial (running) clearance between the outside diameter of the inner flange of the turbine and the inside diameter of the converter housing if the torque converter is to operate with efficiency.2. Check the clearance between the outside diameter of the inner flange of the turbine and the inside diameter of the converter housing as follows: a) Temporarily install bearing (3), split race (2) and spacer (1) in the housing as shown. b) Install turbine (4) as shown. c) Install tool (A) on the housing as shown. Push on the hub of the turbine to make sure the turbine is parallel with the housing. Slide the turbine toward tool (A) until it makes contact with the housing. Adjust dial indicator to zero. Slide the turbine away from tool (A) until it makes contact with the other side of the housing. Make sure pressure is kept on the hub of the turbine when it is moved to the other side of the housing. Make a record of the dimension measured.d) Make this check at several locations around the turbine and housing. Make a record of each dimension measured.e) The total clearance measured across the diameters must be .040 to .060 in. (1.02 to 1.52 mm) (new) with a maximum permissible clearance of .090 in. (2.29 mm). The radial (running) clearance is half of the clearances measured or .020 to .030 in. (0.51 to 0.76 mm) (new) with a maximum permissible radial (running) clearance of .045 in. (1.14 mm).3. There must be a minimum radial (running) clearance between the stator and impeller if the torque converter is to operate with efficiency. Check the clearance between the outside diameter of the inner flange for the stator and the inside diameter of the impeller flange as follows: a) Put the impeller on a flat smooth surface as shown. Install two 1/2" (12.7 mm) diameter rods (5) 18 in. (45.7 cm) long across the impeller as shown. b) Put stator (6) in position on the rods. c) Put tool (A) in the position shown. Slide the stator toward tool (A) until it makes contact with the inside diameter of the impeller and tool (A). Adjust the dial indicator to zero. Keep an even pressure on the stator when it is moved. Move the stator away from tool (A) until it makes contact with the other side of the impeller. Make a record of the dimension measured.d) Make this check at several locations around the impeller and stator. Make a record of each dimension measured. Turn the impeller around tool (A) and the stator when different locations are measured.e) The total clearance measured across the diameters must be .009 to .015 in. (0.23 to 0.38 mm) (new) with a maximum permissible clearance of .023 in. (0.58 mm). The radial (running) clearance is one half of the clearance measured or .0045 to .0075 in. (0.114 to 0.191 mm) (new) with a maximum permissible radial (running) clearance of .012
