Note: Two adjustable supports (1), reaction plate (2), and movable plate (3) are part of Tooling (A) .
Position two supports (1) of Tooling (A) in order to support the recoil spring assembly. Make sure that the two supports are level.
Adjust the spacing between reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3) so that the spacing is approximately the same length as the free length of the recoil spring assembly.

Note: Do not remove the lifting device from the recoil spring assembly until the unit is centered and locked in Tooling (A) .Note: Recoil spring assembly (4) may be installed in Tooling (A) from the end. In this case, the reaction plate must be removed. Then reinstall the reaction plate after the recoil spring assembly is in place on the two adjustable supports in Tooling (A) .Note: The lifting device is removed from the recoil spring assembly for photographic purposes.
Attach an appropriate lifting device to recoil spring assembly (4). The weight of the recoil spring assembly is approximately 53 kg (117 lb). Carefully lift the loosely assembled recoil spring assembly and position the recoil spring assembly on two adjustable supports (1) in Tooling (A) .
Adjust the two adjustable supports until the centerline of recoil spring assembly (4) and the centerline of Tooling (A) are aligned.
Reposition the recoil spring assembly until the rod of the adjuster assembly that is inside the spring is centered in the hole in reaction plate (2). Refer to Illustration 18.

Position plate (19) so that the hole in the plate is centered with both the hole in reaction plate (2) and the rod of adjuster assembly (18) .

After the recoil spring assembly is centered, install pins (5) on the back side of reaction plate (2), as shown.
Operate Tooling (B) enough to hold the recoil spring assembly in position between the reaction plate and the movable plate. Make sure that the recoil spring assembly is centered. Make sure that the rod of adjuster assembly (18) and the hole in washer (19) are centered with the hole in reaction plate (2) .
Personal injury or death can result from recoil spring force. Recoil spring force, if not relieved, can result in personal injury or death.Relieve spring force before removing threaded retainer, performing repairs on recoil spring housing, or removing recoil spring.

Close covers (6) on Tooling (A). Use Tooling (B) to compress the recoil spring assembly slightly.

Open covers (6) on Tooling (A). Measure Dimension (X). The compressed length of Dimension (X) must be 404.6 mm (15.9 inch). If the compressed length of Dimension (X) is not correct, close covers (6) on Tooling (A) and adjust the length with Tooling (B). Adjust the length of Dimension (X) until the compressed length of Dimension (X) is correct.

Install full nut (7). Slowly release the pressure on Tooling (B) until the full nut is seated against
