Illustration 3 g00589956
Illustration 4 g00589950Note: Steps 4 through 6 should be done simultaneously.
Heat bearing (16), bearing (18) and idler gear (17) to a temperature of 135 °C (275 °F). Install bearing (18) and idler gear (17) in the transfer gear case.
Lower the temperature of the shaft (15) to achieve a 100 °C (212 °F) temperature differential between idler gear (17) and shaft (15). Install the shaft in the case while bearing (18) and idler gear (17) are still hot.
Immediately install bearing (16) on shaft (15).
Illustration 5 g00590401
Heat bearing (13) and bearing (14) to a temperature of 135 °C (275 °F). Install the bearings to gear (11).
Check that the bearings and the bearing races are fully seated. Use a feeler gauge with a thickness of 0.003 mm (0.0001 inch) to check for unseated components.
Lubricate the bearings.
Illustration 6 g00574763
Use two people to install gear (11) to the transfer gear case (12). The weight of the gear is 47.5 kg (105 lb).
Install Tooling (A) to transfer case (12).
Illustration 7 g00574072
Install O-ring (10) to carrier (9).
Illustration 8 g00574766
Place carrier (9) into position. Install eight bolts (8) and the washers that secure the carrier.
Attach an appropriate nylon lifting sling and a hoist to the case. Raise the case to the upright position.
Illustration 9 g00581752Note: Step 15 through Step 24 is the same procedure for the idler shaft (center shaft) and for the output shaft (bottom shaft). For the required shims in Step 23, refer to Table 2.
Place cage (5) into position on the case. Do not install the O-ring or the shims.
Install two new bolts and two new washers in positions (B) and (C), as shown above. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 30 2 N m (22 1.5 lb ft). Rotate the gear for three revolutions. Repeat this process until the bolts remain at the specified torque.
Loosen the bolts and remove the washers. Rotate the gear for three revolutions. Install the two bolts without the washers. Use small increments to install the carrier on an even plane.
Tighten the bolts in small increments. Tighten to a torque of 10 N m (7 lb ft). Rotate the gear for three revolutions.
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 15 .5 N m (11 0.5 lb ft). Tighten the bolts in small increments. Rotate the gear for three revolutions. Repeat this procedure three times or repeat until the bolts remain at the proper torque.
Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the cage to the case. Use lifting holes (D) and (E) to measure the depth. Record the measurement from each side. Calculate the average of the two sides.
Remove the two bolts. Remove the cage. Use a micrometer to measure the thickness of the cage. Measure the thickness near each lifting hole. Calculate the average of the two sides.
Subtract the measurement in Step 21 from the measurement in Step 20. The result is the average gap between the cage and the case.
Assemble the shims so that the amount is equal to the average gap. Now add the
