Information:
You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.Hydraulic Tank
Change Oil
Operate the machine long enough to warm the oil. 1. Park the machine on level ground. Lower all attachments to the ground. Apply slight down pressure. Engage the parking brake. Stop the engine. 2. Remove the hydraulic system oil tank fill cap and strainer.3. Wash the fill strainer and fill cap in clean, nonflammable solvent. 4. Remove the oil drain valve cover, located under the right rear of machine. Remove the oil drain plug.5. Attach a 10 cm (4 in) long hose to a 1 inch NPT pipe nipple. Install the pipe nipple and hose into the drain plug opening.6. Turn the pipe nipple clockwise to open the internal drain valve. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.7. Remove the pipe nipple and hose to close the hydraulic oil tank drain valve.8. Clean and install the drain plug. Tighten the plug to a torque of 68 7 N m (50 5 lb ft). Install oil drain valve cover.9. Change the hydraulic system filter. See the topic Hydraulic System under Every 500 Service Hours or 3 Months in the Maintenance Section of this manual.10. Install the fill strainer. 11. Fill the hydraulic system oil tank. See the Refill Capacities chart in the Maintenance Section of this manual.12. Inspect the fill cap gasket. Replace the gasket if damaged.13. Install the oil fill cap.14. Start and run the engine for a few minutes. 15. Maintain the oil level to the FULL mark in the sight gauge.16. Stop the engine.Engine Valve Clearance Setting
Adjust
To prevent possible injury, do not use the starter motor to turn the flywheel.Hot engine components can cause burns. Allow additional time for the engine to cool before measuring valve clearance.
Measure the valve clearance with the engine stopped. To obtain an accurate measurement, allow at least 20 minutes for the valves to cool to engine cylinder head and block temperature.
Adjust the valve clearance to within 0.08 mm (.003 in) of the valve clearance setting given in the chart. Refer to the machine's Service Manual or contact your Caterpillar dealer for the complete valve adjustment procedure.Engine Valve Rotators
Check
When inspecting the valve rotators, protective glasses or face shield and protective clothing must be worn, to prevent being burned by hot oil spray.
1. Start the engine and run at LOW IDLE. 2. Watch the top surface on each valve rotator. Each valve rotator should turn slightly each time the valve closes.3. Stop the engine. If a valve fails to rotate, contact your Caterpillar dealer.Track Roller Frame Guides
Measure Wear
Measure the rotational movement of the front roller frame relative to the rear roller frame. 1. Raise the front of the machine with the bulldozer hydraulics. Place a 100 mm (4 in) block under the outside end of a track grouser near the idler. Lower the machine onto the block. 2. Use a grease pencil to
