B     1P-2420     Transmission Repair Stand     1    Start By:
Remove the fixed axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fixed Axle (Front) - Remove and Install".
Remove the oscillating axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oscillating Axle (Rear) - Remove and Install".Note: There are no service brakes for the oscillating axle (rear) on the 815F II or the 816F II compactors.Note: The axle housing assemblies that are used in the front fixed axle and in the rear oscillating axle are similar. Therefore, both axle housing assemblies can be removed in the same manner.
Illustration 1 g00301040
Typical Example
Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.
Position the axle on Tooling (B) in a vertical position.Note: Carefully remove axle housing assembly (2) .
Fasten Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the rim of the axle shaft. Remove bolts (1) that secure axle housing assembly (2) to the differential housing. Carefully remove axle housing assembly (2). The weight of axle housing assembly (2) is approximately 363 kg (800 lb).Note: The service brakes that are part of the fixed axle are similar to the service brakes that are part of the oscillating axle. Therefore, both service brakes can be removed in the same manner.

Remove reaction plate (3) .
Illustration 3 g01330387
Remove springs (6), sun gear (5), and friction disc (4) .
Illustration 4 g00497120
Personal injury can result from air pressure against the brake piston. The brake piston can come out of the differential housing assembly with force when applying air pressure. To prevent possible personal injury, the brake piston must be retained in the differential housing assembly when applying air pressure.
Retain brake piston (7). Apply shop air pressure to Fitting (Y). Use approximately 525 kPa (75 psi). Brake piston (7) will move out of the differential housing.
Illustration 5 g00497171
Remove seal (8) and seal assembly (9) .
Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for the remaining service brake.
