The Product Link PL141 is a communications system that uses cellular towers to transmit information to Caterpillar, Caterpillar dealers, and Caterpillar customers. The unit contains a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and a 3G cellular communications MODEM.The Product Link PL131, PL141, and PL161 systems have no electrical or electronics connections to the asset. The Product Link devices are powered by an internal battery. The battery is designed to provide approximately three years of reporting at the standard rate.The Product Link PL131, PL141, and PL161 provide the customer with the following information:
Location
Geo-Fence capabilities on the server sideThe systems allow communication between the equipment and a remote user such as a Caterpillar dealer or a customer.The Product Link PL131 and PL141 systems transmit the devices location up to four times per day. The information goes from the Product Link system to a cellular tower or satellite. From the cellular tower or satellite, the information is sent to the "Caterpillar Main Frame", and on to the user interface, either Product Link Web or VisionLink. The information can be accessed by Caterpillar, Caterpillar dealers, and Caterpillar customers. At the scheduled report time the device is able to receive a configuration change command that is used to change the scheduled daily report time.Product Link PL161 System
Illustration 3 g06144533The Product Link PL161 system advertises its own identification once every eight seconds. A receiver actively scans for the PL161 signal receives the PL161 broadcast, adds the current time and the receivers current location to the data, and then sends that data to the Caterpillar database and on to the user interface, VisionLink. The user interface will then show the "Last Known Location" of the asset being tracked. The receiver used for the first generation of the PL161 is a smart phone running the Caterpillar TrackIt scanning application. The location shown in the user interface will be the location of the phone, not the PL161, and the location accuracy will vary by phone model. The TrackIt application sends accumulated data to the user interface every 30 minutes while the application is running.Scheduled Reporting
The PL131 and PL141 systems can be set up to report on a regular schedule to the user interface. The scheduled daily report time can be modified through the VisionLink device configuration page.The PL161 does not report on a regular schedule. New location reports will show up in the user interface whenever a receiver detects the advertisement broadcast from the PL161 and sends that information to Caterpillar. The Caterpillar scanning application, TrackIt, must be running on a smart phone to detect any PL161 devices in the vicinity. The broadcast range of the PL161
