Introduction
This Special Instruction provides the procedure to install a 136-2241 Latch Kit on Challenger Agricultural Tractors equipped with removable front grills using the 8Y-6353 Latch-Enclosure.The 136-2241 Latch Kit contains all of the parts needed to convert a 8Y-6353 Latch-Enclosure (flip-up and rotate style) into a rotational style latch as equipped on "D" Series machines. The new latch has a positive locking mechanism to keep the latch pawl from getting "out of register". The new latch is equipped with a longer pawl to allow more engagement with the side panels. Before installing the latch kit, refer to the Reference Article if insufficient latch engagement problems have been reported. In many cases, latch engagement can be improved with proper adjustment.Reference: Service Magazine; March 28, 1994; Page 1; "Latch May Not Secure Radiator Guard Properly, Without Correct Panel Position".Parts List
Two latch kits are required in order to retrofit one grill assembly.Tools Required
Installation Procedure
Installation of 132-2241 Latch Kit.
(X) Open. (Y) Closed. (H) Side Panel. (J) Grill Assembly. (K) Closed Position. (L) Open Position.1. Remove the grill assembly.2. Remove the two existing 8Y-6353 Latches from the grill assembly.3. Using plate assembly (1) as a template, drill four 7.5 mm (.30 in) holes at Location (A) and Location (B) of the grill assembly as shown in the illustration. Plate assembly (1) should pilot into existing grill latch opening.4. Using screw (2), washer (3), and nut (4), install plate assembly (1) onto the grill latch opening as shown in the illustration. Repeat on the opposite side. Make sure that plate assembly (1) is installed on the INSIDE of the grill assembly. The raised portion (pilot) of plate assembly (1) should fit inside the existing rectangular hole in the grill assembly.5. Install latch assembly (5) as shown in View G-G of the illustration. The pawls (6) should face outward when the latch assemblies are oriented horizontally as shown in Location (K).Make sure that when you install and assemble latch assembly (5) and cam-latch (6), the pawls rotate as shown in View G-G of the illustration. Also make sure that, when closed, the latch and pawl engage the side panel as shown in Section F-F of the illustration. Verify the proper orientation needed to rotate from Location (X) to Location (Y) as shown in View G-G.6. Trial fit the grill assembly to the machine. Check to make sure that sufficient pawl engagement occurs on the side panel at Location (D). If more engagement is needed, adjust the side panels inward slightly by loosening and sliding inward the upper support cones on which the side panels rest. Refer to the reference article for more information on side panel adjustment. If the grill assembly is loose against the side panels, it is possible to install a washer in Location (E) in order to tighten the fit.
