TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN April 16, 2003
Product Family-Marine Engines 3176B(9WK), 3176C(6BW),3196(2XR) MARINE ENGINES
Component Code(s) 1065SUBJECT: Poor mid-range acceleration and smoke in 3176 and 3196 marine engines.
PROBLEM:
Erosion of the turbine housing can cause low boost in some 3176 and 3196 marine engines. This will cause excessive smoke and poor mid-range performance.
SOLUTION:
Review TIBU3523-00 "Boost Sensor ? Use Correct Replacement Part" to make sure that the engine has the correct boost pressure sensor and elbow.
Check the intake and exhaust system for leaks. Repair any leaks that are found.
Check performance of the engine. This can be done in twin engine applications by placing one engine at full throttle and reducing the throttle on the sister engine until the first engine lugs down to 2300 rpm. Compare the boost pressure to the engine test history for the engine being tested. If the boost pressure is low, measure the gap between the turbine housing and the turbine wheel.
The gap between the turbine housing and the turbine wheel can be measured as follows:
Push the turbine wheel in toward the center section of the turbo to remove the end play.
Insert a feeler gage between the turbine wheel and the turbine housing.
If the gap is more than 0.030" (0.762 mm), replace the turbine housing. In some cases, it may also be necessary to replace the turbocharger cartridge.
