Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Submit a DSN for any machine that has a closed crankcase breather (CCB) that freezes. The DSN will ensure checks that the engine does not require any repairs.Problem
The closed circuit breather may freeze in sustained ambient temps below −18° C (0° F). Ice takes many hours of low load operation to build up in the system to cause a problem. Short periods of operation below those temperatures or higher load operations will maintain above freezing temperatures within the CCB circuit. The problem has resulted in two failures modes. The most common is the dipstick and oil being pushed out the dipstick tube. The second is the turbo seal failing, sending oil into the intake and exhaust systems.Solution

The CCB may freezing in two locations. In the bottom part of the CCB canister (A) and the drain hose (B). Refer to Illustration 1. The following interim solution is recommended until a permanent solution is available.
Adhere to the OMM for oil, which recommends SAE 0W-40 for temps below −18° C (0° F). Also adhere to standard cold-weather practices, like using block heaters and plugging in machines over night as needed.
After warming up the engine as per the OMM, do not run the engine at low idle. Instead ensure that the engine speed is set at a speed setting of eight or more. Also turn off the "Auto Engine Idle".

Remove hoses (1), (2), and (3) .

Illustration 4 g03342074
Wrap insulation around hoses (1), (2), and (3). Recommended insulation is adhesive foam pipe insulation with aluminum backing. The easiest insulation for installation is 50.8 mm (2 inch) in diameter. Two examples are Frost King and Dundas JAFine as shown in Illustrations 3 and 4.Note: When insulating hose (1), do not remove the heat wrap (4) or wrap insulation over the heat wrap.
Illustration 5 g03341888
Use electrical tape to ensure that the insulation does not unwrap.
Reinstall hoses (1), (2), and (3) back onto the engine.
