START BY:a. remove air compressorb. remove alternatorc. remove air conditioning compressor (if equipped)d. remove water pumpe. remove oil pan plate The procedure that follows was done with the oil pan and the oil pan plate removed. However, the timing gear cover can be removed without removing the oil pan and the oil pan plate. Remove the bolts that hold the oil pan and oil pan plate to the timing gear cover. Loosen the remaining bolts that hold the oil pan in position. Install metal spacers between the cylinder block and the oil pan plate gasket to hold the gasket away from the timing gear cover. The spacers must be located back from the front surface of the cylinder block approximately 51 mm (2.00 in.). If the gasket is damaged, remove the oil pan plate. See Oil Pan Plate. Put tooling (A) in position under the flange of the oil pan and aligned with the spacers. 1. Put tooling (A) in position under the cylinder block as shown.2. Remove the trunnion from the timing gear cover. See Front Support Trunnion. 3. Remove bolts (1), cover (2) and the O-ring seal from the backside of the timing gear plate. 4. Remove the bolt and clip (3) that holds the wiring harness to alternator bracket (4).5. Remove the bolts and alternator bracket (4) from the timing gear cover.6. Remove the bolts and clips (7) and (8) that hold the wiring harness to the timing gear cover. Put identification marks on all the bolts and their location on timing gear cover (5) before they are removed.7. Remove all bolts (6) that hold the timing gear cover in place on the engine. Remove timing gear cover (5) and the gasket from the engine.Install Timing Gear Cover
1. Install a new gasket on the timing gear plate. Cut the gasket even with the bottom face of the cylinder block. Put 5H2471 Cement on the bottom of the gasket where it makes contact with the gasket for the oil pan plate.2. Put timing gear cover (3) in position on the engine, and install the bolts that hold it in place.3. Put clips (1) and (2) that hold the wiring harness in place on the timing gear cover, and install the bolts that hold them. Tighten the four bolts at location (X) to a torque of 23 4 N m (17 3 lb.ft.). 4. Put alternator bracket (4) in position on the timing gear cover, and install two bolts (6) that hold it in place.5. Put clip (5) that holds the wiring harness to the alternator bracket in position, and install the bolt that holds it. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 23 4 N m (17 3 lb.ft.). 6. Put the O-ring seal and cover (8) in position, and install two bolts (7) that hold it in place.7. Install the trunnion on the timing gear cover. See Front Support Trunnion.8.
