The engine oil pump picks up oil from the main oil sumps (2) through a suction bell (1). The main oil sumps are connected by passages beneath the center scavenge sump (6).Two end scavenge sumps (3) and (8) are connected to the center scavenge sump by tubes (4) and (7). The scavenge pump picks up oil from the center sump (6) through a suction bell (5) and delivers the oil to the main sumps through a passage in the oil pan base.Two plates are installed over the main oil sumps and are sealed with a rubber gasket. Engines equipped with a single-section oil pump do not have the scavenge sumps. The entire pan forms a single reservoir rather than the divided system shown here.
