(2) Use an Arcair torch to remove plates (8) (8K1555 Carbody) or plate (9) (3V5021 or 4V5601 Carbody) from between the upper and lower plates of the carbody. Remove tube assemblies (10). Inspect all welds inside the carbody for cracks. Use an Arcair torch to gouge (cut out) the cracks to the full depth of the cracks. Make repairs to the welds and cracks as needed. (3) Use the above dimensions to cut shape (D) from a thick piece of paper as shown. This will be used as a guide to mark the correct size for a section to be removed from the center ring. (4) Put the piece of paper (D) made in step 3 in center position on the center ring as shown. Make a mark around the paper. Use a cutting torch to remove the section from the center ring. Use 7V3883 Plate Assembly (11) as a guide to trim (cut away) the opening until the edges of plate (11) extend the same distance on each side of the center ring at (E). Grind the areas smooth where the cuts were made. 7V3883 Plate Assembly (11) must fit tight in the opening.(5) Tack weld plate (11) in position as shown. Make .60" (15.0) bevel groove welds all around and on both sides of plate (11). Grind the welds to get a smooth junction between plate (11) and the existing center ring. Tack weld 4V5849 Plate (12) between the tubes on plate (11) as shown. Make .51" (13.0) fillet welds along front side (F), top (G) and bottom (H) along each side of plate (12). Care should be taken when weld (F) is made; a strong weld connection is important at this location. (6) Tack weld 7V8139 Plate Assembly (13) in position as shown. Make 20.0 (.79") bevel groove welds and 20.0 (.79") fillet welds along the top and bottom of plate (13) at locations (J); make 35.0 (1.38") bevel groove welds along each end of plate (13) at locations (K). (7) Use Magna-flux or dye penetrant to check the welds around center ring (14) and top ring (5) for cracks or damaged areas. Use an Arcair torch or similar tool to gouge (cut out) all cracks to the depth of the cracks but do not burn through the plates. Fill the cracks with weld. Remove weld (L) from around the outside of ring (5) and grind the area smooth. This weld was removed in preparation to install reinforcement plates to be done later in this instruction. Make repairs to the top ring (5) inside welds (M) but do not increase the size of the weld. (8) Tackweld plates (15) (made in step 1, page 2) in position in each side of the carbody as shown. Plates (15) should be parallel to the carbody front to rear centerline and must be in the true vertical position. Make 25.0 (.98") bevel groove welds across each end
