Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Park the machine on a level surface. Ensure that the parking brake is fully engaged. Lower the body and shut off the engine.Note: Drain the crankcase while the oil is warm and while the oil is well circulated. This ensures that waste particles will be suspended in the oil and that these particles will be removed as the oil is drained.

Remove four bolts (1) and remove plate (2) .

Remove oil drain valve plug (3). Open oil drain valve (4) until oil flows from the hole. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
Clean the oil drain valve and close the oil drain valve.
Clean the oil drain valve plug and install the oil drain valve plug.
Raise the hood. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hood Control".

Note: Engine oil filter (5) is mounted on the right side of the engine.
Remove the engine oil filter with a strap type wrench. Inspect the used engine oil filter.Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Oil Filter - Inspect".
Clean the oil filter base.
Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the seal of the new oil filter.
Install the new oil filter by hand. When the seal contacts the oil filter base, turn the oil filter by 270° more. This will tighten the oil filter sufficiently.Each new oil filter has rotation index marks that are spaced at 90 degree increments. Use the rotation index marks as a guide for tightening the oil filter.

Oil filler cap (6) is located on the middle valve cover of the engine.
Remove oil filler cap (6). Fill the crankcase with new oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacites (Refill) ".

Remove dipstick (7) and then clean the dipstick. Reinstall the dipstick.
Remove the dipstick and check the oil level. Maintain the oil level within the shaded area. If necessary, add oil.
Install the oil filler cap.
Start the engine and allow the oil to warm. Check the engine for leaks.
Stop the engine.
Carefully raise the rear of plate (2). Install one bolt (1) and the washer on either side of plate (2) in order to secure the plate into position.
