Remove the valve covers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Mechanism Cover - Remove and Install".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Remove the cover from the flywheel housing and install Tool (A). Use Tool (A) and turn the crankshaft until there is no pressure on rocker arm (2) .
Use Tool (B) and move the rocker arm away from push rod (1). Remove push rod (1) .

Install Tool (C) on the valve lifter. Remove valve lifter (3) from the cylinder block.

Remove lifter guide spring (2) from the lifter assembly.Note: When a lifter is removed from the engine, a new guide spring must be installed on the lifter.
Repeat step 1 through step 4 for the remainder of the lifters, if necessary.Installation Procedure
Note: When a lifter is removed from the engine, a new guide spring must be installed on the lifter.

Install a new spring guide (5) .

Put the lifter in position on Tool (D). Make sure that the spring guide (5) is in position in the groove in the lifter.

Use a soft hammer and install Tool (E). Make sure that the groove in Tool (E) is aligned with spring guide (5) .Note: Lubricate the ball socket for the push rod and the bore for the valve lifter assembly with clean engine oil.

Put clean engine oil on valve lifter (4). Use Tool (E) in order to install the lifter in the cylinder block. Make sure that the end of the spring guide aligns with the hole in the cylinder block.
Use the 5P-6599 Handle Assembly (6) from Tool (C). Push the lifter off Tool (E) once the lifter is in the proper position in the cylinder block.

Use Tool (A). Turn the crankshaft in order to remove any pressure on the push rods and the rocker arms.
Put push rod (1) in position in the cylinder block. Use Tool (B) in order to move rocker arm (1) away from the push rod. Move the rocker arm in order for the push rod to be inserted in position under the rocker arm.
