Use a stable work platform placed in a secure location when lubricating the pillar, working on the fuel tank, or working on the hydraulic tank. If a secure location is not available, use the appropriate safety equipment to prevent falling off of the machine. Failure to work from a secure location may result in injury or death from a slip or a fall.
Note: An inspection of the machine should be completed at the beginning of each shift.

Inspect the engine compartment. Remove any debris buildup from the engine compartment.
Inspect the engine for any obvious component damage. If any belts are worn, cracked or frayed, replace the damaged belts.
Inspect the cooling system for leaks and for faulty hoses. If leaks are observed, find the source of the leak and correct the leak. If leaks are suspected, check the fluid levels more frequently than the recommended intervals. Replace hoses, as needed. Remove any debris buildup from the radiator. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Radiator Core - Clean".
Inspect the hydraulic system for leaks. Check the hydraulic tank, all hoses and all tubes. Also, check all plugs, all seals, all couplings and all fittings. If leaks are observed, find the source of the leak and correct the leak. If leaks are suspected, check the fluid levels more frequently than the recommended intervals. Replace hoses, as needed.
Inspect the engine air filter service indicator. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Air Filter Service Indicator - Inspect/Replace".
Inspect the engine air precleaner. Inspect the air inlet screen. Inspect the precleaner tube openings. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Air Precleaner - Clean".
Inspect working lights (1) and all exterior lights for broken bulbs and for broken lenses. Replace the bulbs or the lenses, as needed.
Inspect the condition and mounting of gate (2). Make sure that the guide path for the gate is free from obstructions. Any debris in the guide path may prevent the gate from moving back and forth. Any debris in the guide path may prevent the gate from moving up and down. Inspect gate (2) for any damage and repair gate (2), if necessary.
Inspect the following items for wear and for damage: boom, stick, extension, damper, rotator and grapple. Tighten any loose bolts.
Inspect the bunks and stakes (4) for damage. Make sure that the bunks are mounted properly to the machine. Ensure that the brackets are properly secured into the bunk arrangement.
Inspect the tires for damage. Replace any missing valve caps.
Inspect the axles, the bogies, the rims, the differentials and the power train for leaks. Fix any leaks.
Make sure that all access doors, all access covers and all guards are secured. Inspect the access doors, the access covers and the guards for damage.
Inspect the steps, the walkways and the handholds. Remove any debris. Repair any damage or replace any damaged parts.
Inspect the operator compartment. Remove any trash buildup. Keep the operator compartment clean.
