If the engine will not be started for several weeks, the lubricating oil will drain from the cylinder walls and from the piston rings. Rust can form on the cylinder walls, resulting in increased engine wear and reduced engine service life.To help prevent excessive engine wear, use the following guidelines:
Complete all of the lubrication recommendations that are listed in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule" in the Maintenance Section.
If freezing temperatures are expected, check the cooling system for adequate protection against freezing. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities and Recommendations" in the Maintenance Section for additional information.Special precautions should be made under the following conditions:
The engine is out of operation.
Use of the engine is not planned.If the engine will be stored for more than one month, a complete protection procedure is recommended. Consult your Caterpillar dealer. Your Caterpillar dealer will have instructions for preparing the engine for extended storage periods.Refer to the Special Instruction, SEHS9031 for more detailed information on engine storage.
