Information:
At the 1983 International Work Boat Show in New Orleans, Caterpillar introduced a new in-vessel test procedure called Marine PAR. Since then, this comprehensive new test procedure has helped many customers maximize the fuel efficiency and performance of their Caterpillar Marine Product.
What is Marine PAR and what does it do? The following interview with Caterpillar Marine National Accounts Manager, Mike Rose, reviews some of the benefits PAR provides.
Q: What exactly is Marine PAR?
A: Marine PAR stands for Marine Performance Analysis Report. It is an in-vessel test procedure that uses the latest diagnostic equipment and computer analysis to examine the engine, transmission, wheel, keel coolers and air systems. This procedure, offered only by Caterpillar Marine Dealers, compares the performance of the marine products, as installed in the vessel, to the original specifications across the engine's entire operating range. By doing a PAR test at installation and repeat testing during the engine's life, owners can be assured that their vessels' systems are all properly matched for maximum power and fuel efficiency.
Q: When do you recommend doing the PAR test?
A: The PAR test is designed to be used for sea trial, periodic (annual) tests and for problem diagnosis. We recommend PAR testing be performed at sea trial. This gives the owner a reliable means to audit the shipyard's and architect's performance in following Caterpillar engine installation recommendations in constructing or repowering a vessel. It also provides good data base for predicting vessel repairs.
Q: Why do you recommend an annual PAR test?
A: For the same reason your physician suggests an annual "checkup". By doing a PAR test on a periodic basis, the owner can assure that all systems are functioning properly and efficiently. In addition to monitoring engine performance, PAR testing can also detect damaged wheels and rudders as well as cooling system deterioration.
Q: You also mentioned that PAR can be used for diagnosing problems.
A: That's right. At any time a dramatic change in engine or vessel performance is noticed, a PAR test can be performed to identify system problems. A system malfunction or failure can reoccur if the actual cause of the problem is not corrected. With PAR testing, systems can be thoroughly instrumented and diagnosed with a minimum of downtime. By using the PAR, guesswork is eliminated and problems are identified without "trial and error" replacement of parts and components.
Q: Improved fuel efficiency is one of the benefits you're saying PAR testing provides. How does PAR testing help save fuel?
A: The PAR test analyzes the actual work capability of the engine, transmission and wheel. By assuring these components are properly matched to one another and to the intended application - we can optimize engine fuel efficiency while maximizing power. In some cases where a change to the wheel or transmission is impossible, the engine capability can be adjusted to get the best performance and fuel economy for that particular installation. This could mean a lower horsepower and rpm rating, depending upon the problem diagnosed by the PAR test.
