Steps 13-19 in the Disassembly and Assembly Manual are incorrect. They should read the same as in the Specifications Manual, Items 1-8 also referenced, and as below. Also, a tool can be produced to assist in adjusting the bearings as referenced above in the Service Magazine. The correct procedure is as follows:
13. Install wheel assembly (2) on spindle (4) and install hub and ring gear assembly.14. Measure the thickness of retainer (1) at the three small holes in the retainer. Find the average of the three measurements.15. Install retainer (1) without shims, using only three bolts. Install the bolts next to the three small holes used for the measurements. Tighten the three bolts to a torque of 100 N m (75 lb ft). Turn wheel assembly (2) for several revolutions and tighten the bolts again to a torque of 100 N m (75 lb ft). 16. Loosen the three bolts. Tighten the three bolts again, only to a torque of 25 N m (18 lb ft); then turn the wheel assembly for several revolutions. Repeat this procedure, tightening and turning, until the bolt torque stays at 25 N m (18 lb ft). 17. Use a depth micrometer (17) to measure the distance to the end of the spindle through the three small holes. Find the average of the three measurements.18. Subtract the average measurement made in Step 14 from the average measurement made in Step 17. This is gap (A) between the end of the spindle and retainer.19. Make up shim pack whose thickness equals gap (A) plus 0.20 mm (.008 in).20. Install shim pack, retainer and all bolts. Tighten to a torque of 150 N m (110 lb ft).
