Information:
1. Fasten a hoist to flywheel (1) with tooling (A).2. Remove two of bolts (2), and install two 1"-14 NF guide bolts 6 in. (152 mm) long in their place. Remove the remainder of bolts (1).
typical example3. Install two 5/8 "-11 NC eyebolts in each side of flywheel (2), and use a pry bar to remove flywheel (1) from the end of the crankshaft. Step 3 is necessary only if the flywheel will not easily separate from the cranshaft.4. Remove flywheel (1). The weight of the flywheel is 167 kg (370 lb).5. If necessary, remove the ring gear from the flywheel with a hammer and punch. The following steps are for installation of the flywheel. It is advisable, due to close tolerance, to remove the magnetic pickups in the flywheel housing prior to installation of the flywheel. See Step 10 and associated note for the proper setting.6. If the flywheel ring gear has damage, a replacement can be installed as follows:a. Remove the damaged ring gear from the flywheel.b. Heat the ring gear to a maximum temperature of 316°C (600°F), and install it on the flywheel so the chamfer of the gear teeth will be toward the starter pinion when the flywheel is installed.7. Install two 1"-14 NF guide bolts 6 in. (152 mm) long in the end of the crankshaft.8. Fasten a hoist and tooling (A) to flywheel (1) and position it on the guide bolts. Make sure the mark on the flywheel is in alignment with the mark on the crankshaft.9. Put 2P2506 Thread Lubricant on the threads of bolts (2), and install ten bolts (2) in flywheel (1). Remove the hoist and tooling (A) from flywheel (1).10. Install the remainder of the bolts, and tighten all of the bolts to a torque of 1150 60 N m (848 44 lb.ft.). If the flywheel or the ring gear was replaced, it may be necessary to adjust magnetic pick-ups located in the top of the flywheel housing. Clearance between the magnetic pick-up and the flywheel ring gear is 0.55 to 0.83 mm (.022 to .033 in). With the engine stopped, turn in the pick-up until it comes in contact with the teeth on the flywheel ring gear. Turn the pick-up back out 1/21/10 turn. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 45 7N m (35 5 lb ft). For additional information concerning the magnetic pick-ups, refer to publication, SENR4636 Specifications Manual, for 3516 Locomotive Engine. If necessary, check flywheel runout. See the topic, Flywheel Runout in the 3516 Locomotive Engines Specifications Manual, Form No. SENR4636.
