PROBLEM
Certain 773G Off-Highway Trucks are experiencing unusual valve train wear that includes pitting and spalling to the camshaft lobe and/or rocker roller. The failure results in poor performance leading to early hour replacement of the valve train components.
AFFECTED PRODUCT
Model Identification Number
773G MWH00247, 309-312, 319-321, 329-330, 333, 335, 370-373
PARTS NEEDED
No parts needed for this program
ACTION REQUIRED
Every 2000 hours and during a regular service interval remove the engine valve covers, inspect the camshaft and valve rocker rollers, and document the camshaft and rocker arm condition.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual SEBU8547 for the valve rotators inspection procedure.
Nominal wear is to be expected on valve train components during engine life. Spalling and pitting may be present but do not necessarily indicate an eminent failure. A failure is considered when a machine is low on power or the upper valve train wear is progressing towards a low power complaint or mechanical failure.
Documentation should include clear pictures of the camshaft and rocker arms components.
SOS oil sampling should be done in-line with each oil change and closely monitored with the results kept on file with work order numbers attached.
Image 1 and Image 2 show examples of rocker arm rollers and camshafts to help identify failures.
The following Inspections will not be covered under this Program:
1.) The initial 500 Hr Inspection and Valve lash adjustment for the new engines and newly assembled trucks. But this work still needs to be performed as per the OMM.
2.) The 3000 Hr Inspection and Valve lash adjustment. But this work still needs to be performed as per the OMM.
