Fuel Injection Timing Procedure
De-energize the fuel system by placing the machine key in the off position. To check fuel injection timing the fuel system should not be pressurized. Fuel pump off.Note: The spill port timing method is the only recommended procedure to check injection timing.
Illustration 1 g06091935
Remove the stop solenoid (1).
Illustration 2 g06091937
(2) Fuel injection line for cylinder 1
(3) Injection pump nut
Remove the fuel injection line for cylinder one (2).Note: Always use a backup wrench when removing or installing the injection line. If the nut (3) moves the injection pump delivery calibration will be incorrect.
Set the speed control lever to the position of maximum fuel discharge.
Illustration 3 g03369206
Illustration 4 g06091943
Using a screwdriver, turn the flywheel counterclockwise until fuel comes out of the delivery valve holder for the first cylinder. As soon as you see fuel move up, Stop turning the flywheel immediately.Note: Refer to Illustration 4 which shows the section view of starting and stopping point of the fuel in the cone.
Calculate the angle at which the center of the window points out. The flywheel has a mark 1TC and 4 lines that represent increments of .09 radians (5°) of the crank angle from .17 radians (10°) to .44 radians (25°) before 1 TC.Refer to the Table 1 for the correct fuel injection timing. This timing procedure is the “spill port timing” method and timing will vary depending on engine size.
Table 1
Injection Timing Factory Specifications C1.3 15.25 to 16.75 before TDC
C1.7 3.25 to 4.75 before TDC
C1.8 4.25 to 5.57 before TDC
C2.4 4.25 to 5.75 before TDC Note: The timing on the valve cover is 1 degree later from the chart due to using the spill port timing procedure. It is not recommended to use any other timing procedure.
If the result is different from specified injection timing, add or remove the shim to adjust. Fuel pump timing can be advanced by removing shims or retarded by the addition of shims.Note: When reinstalling the fuel injection lines a backup wrench is required to prevent the nut on the pump from moving. If the nut moves the injection pump delivery calibration will be incorrect.Shims

(E) C1.8 0.175 mm (0.007 inch) Shim
(F) C2.4 0.175 mm (0.007 inch) ShimShims are available in five thicknesses that are listed below:
0.175 mm (0.007 inch)
0.20 mm (0.008 inch)
0.25 mm (0.01 inch)
0.30 mm (0.012 inch)
0.35 mm (0.014 inch)Fuel pump timing can be advanced by removing shims or retarded by the addition of shims . A shim thickness of 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) equals 0.009 radians (0.5°).Note: Use the same number of gasket shims and with the same thickness when the pump is disassembled or replaced.Note: Do not use the 0.175 mm (0.007 inch) thick shim as the top shim (injection pump side), otherwise a leak will occur.
