Thoroughly inspect the harness connectors for actuator (1). Also, check the mechanical condition of bypass valve (2). Check the full travel of the valve for binding. Inspect the condition of connectors (3), (4), (5), and (6). Also, inspect fuses (7) and (8). Ensure that terminals (9) for the −Battery connections are tight and free of corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".

Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the circuit for the compressor bypass actuator.
Check the torque of the allen head screws for each of the ECM connectors and for the engine interface connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors" for the correct torque values.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points from the battery to the junction box. Check that the fuses for the circuit are not blown.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are connected properly. The connectors and the wiring do not have corrosion, abrasion, or pinch points.Results:
OK - The connectors, wiring, and fuses appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - The connectors, wiring, circuit breakers, and fuses are not OK.Repair: Repair the problem. Replace parts, if necessary. Verify that the repair has eliminated the original problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check for Diagnostic Codes
Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
Restore the electrical power to the engine. Set the engine control switch to the STOP position.
Look for an active 1720-9 diagnostic code or a 1720-12 diagnostic code.Note: Monitor the active diagnostic code and the logged diagnostic codes on Cat ET. Wait at least 30 seconds in order for diagnostic codes to become active.
Set the engine control switch to the OFF/RESET position. Remove the electrical power from the engine.Expected Result:The 1720-9 or 1720-12 codes are not active.Results:
OK - The 1720-9 or 1720-12 codes are not active at this time.Repair: There does not appear to be a problem in the circuits of the actuator for the bypass valve at this time. If one of these codes is logged,
