General Tips
Check the following items when you are troubleshooting.
Make sure that all of the required components are responding.Use the "Diagnostics" dialogs to check components.
Make sure that the components have the correct versions of firmware loaded.Use the "Diagnostics" dialog and the Program Log in order to check this. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Diagnostics - View".
Make sure that all of the cable connections are secure and undamaged.
Watch for errors or warnings.Make a note of any messages that appear on the screen. You can also check the program log.
Find out the steps performed that led to the problem.
Check if the steps that created the problem can be repeated.GPS Troubleshooting Tips
The AccuGrade System is designed to work with the MS980C GPS receiver. Before contacting your dealer or Caterpillar, make sure of the following.
You have a MS980C GPS receiver with the correct firmware. Do one of the following in order to check this. - Perform the tests for the receiver. Refer to Systems Operation, RENR8083, "Receiver Test" for more information. - Use the MS CAN Controller software. Refer to Systems Operation, RENR8083, "Receiver Front Panel Emulator" for more information.
Data is received from the GPS receiver.
There is power on the Display.
All of the connectors are secure.
You note the version number of the software for the AccuGrade System that appears on the "Setup Menu – Configuration" dialog or from the ProgramLog.txt file.
You note the serial number of the AccuGrade System from the ProgramLog.txt file.Automatic Controls Troubleshooting Tips
In general, problems with automatic controls fall into two groups:
Error conditions or system states that cause automatic control to be suspended, or that prevent you from turning on automatic controls
Automatic control behaviour that causes poor quality or inaccurate finished surfacesError Conditions And System States
To troubleshoot automatic control error and state problems, use the information in Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8006, "Automatic Control System" in order to check the state of the system against the list of states that prevent automatic controls to be used.Also, use the information in Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8006, "Flashing Messages" to understand any error messages that are displayed.Poor Results
It is beyond the scope of this manual to cover troubleshooting poor results in detail. However, when you talk about the problem with your site manager or Caterpillar dealer, consider the following possible causes:Poor Technique - Cutting too fast, trying to move too much material, or causing the machine to move awkwardly are the most significant cause of poor results. Poor Technique can extend the system beyond its design limits. Some common examples include the following:
Changing the angle of an excavator tilt bucket while the excavator is rotating quickly. This can result in inaccurate guidance until the bucket is stationary for a few moments.
Cutting a rough surface with a dozer at too high a speed. This can result in a rippled or wavey final surface.
Cutting a surface with a grader when the machine is bouncing or duckwalking. This can result in an uneven final surface.
