Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the fuel tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the capacity of the fuel tank.

Attach a suitable lifting device to fuel tank guard (1). Remove bolts (2) from each side of the machine. Remove bolts (3) and remove fuel tank guard (1). The weight of fuel tank guard (1) is approximately 100 kg (220 lb).

Remove bolts (4). Use two people in order to remove rear cover (5) for the transmission. The weight of rear cover (5) is approximately 25 kg (55 lb).

Remove bolt (6) for the stop for the seat. Slide the seat forward in order to allow access to panel (9) .
Remove screws (7) and (8) and panel (9) .

Remove cable straps (10). Disconnect harness assembly (11) and remove clamp (12) from fuel level sending unit (13) .

Remove cable strap (14) from the front right of the fuel tank.

Remove cable strap (15) from the front left of the fuel tank.

Loosen clamps (16), (17), and (18). Disconnect the hoses from the shut off valves for the fuel.

Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to fuel tank (19). Remove mounting bolts (20).

Slide fuel tank (19) from the machine in order to install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device onto fuel tank (19). Remove fuel tank (19) from the machine. The weight of fuel tank (19) is approximately 123 kg (270 lb).

Remove shut off valves (21), (22), and (23) .
