Whenever the brake caliper is disassembled, all o-rings and back-up rings should be discarded and replaced with new parts.
1. Remove the brake caliper from the machine.2. Make sure all hydraulic pressure is removed from the brake caliper.3. Clean the outside of the caliper with denatured alcohol.4. Remove cotter pin (12) and slotted nut (8) from end of stud (7). Remove the spring retaining cap carefully in the following step. Do not allow the springs to fall out of the housing at this time.5. Use a spanner wrench to remove spring retaining cap (5) from housing (2).6. Washer (6) is secured to spring retaining cap with 3M Pressure Sensitive Adhesive 4910. Do not remove the washer unless necessary to replace.7. Remove two washers (11) and eight springs (4) from inside housing (2). Note the orientation of the springs as they are removed. They must be installed the same way when the brake caliper is reassembled.8. Pull stud (7) and piston (3) out of housing (2).9. Remove o-rings and back-up rings from piston (3), and from inside housing (2).10. Carefully pry underneath each brake pad (1) until snap button (10) releases the pad.11. If necessary, remove two screws (9) and two snap buttons (10).12. Stud (7) is secured to piston (3) with Loctite 277. If necessary to remove the stud, proceed as follows:
Wear gloves and other protective clothing to prevent burns when handling heated components.
a. Install slotted nut (8) and cotter pin (12) to end of stud (7).b. Gently heat the stud and piston for three to five seconds only. Do not exceed 177° C (350° F).c. Try to loosen stud (7) with a wrench. Do not use an impact wrench or hit the stud with a hammer.d. Repeat steps b and c until stud is removed.13. Inspect brake pads (1) for excessive wear, uneven wear, for cracks or other damage. If these conditions exist, the brake pads should be replaced with new parts.
Both brake pads must be replaced at the same time. This will maintain balanced braking force on the fixed disc.
14. Check for oil or grease on the brake pads (1). If present, remove with denatured alcohol or reburnish the pads.15. Inspect o-rings and back-up rings for cuts and damage. Discard the o-rings and back-up rings.16. Inspect piston (3) and the housing bore for scratches and rust. Remove small imperfections with emery cloth. Replace the component if there are large scratches or areas of rust.Assembly
1. If stud (7) was removed from piston (3), install as follows: a. Apply Loctite 277 to the threaded hole in piston (3). Make sure the adhesive is on the threads.b. Install the stud into the piston.2. If screws (9) and snap buttons
