Center of Main Screed (1) Crown adjust motorThe screed is equipped with a power crown control mechanism. The mechanism adjusts the center of the main screed plate providing for a positive crown or negative crown. Electric crown adjust motor (1) powers the crown control mechanism. The motor is located at the front of the left-middle screed frame.Crown adjust motor (1) is an electric motor with gear reduction. The motor is bidirectional. Direction of the motor rotation is controlled by the crown control buttons on the operator stations.

Center of Main Screed (2) Chain (3) Crown adjust screw (4) Rod endsThe crown control mechanism consists of a chain drive assembly and two jack screws. The mechanism is located in the center of the main screed. The top walkways must be removed to access these components.The crown adjust motor drives chain (2) through a sprocket on the output shaft of the motor. The chain turns two crown-adjust screws (3) through sprocket driven U-joints. This chain drive structure is attached to the top of the left main screed frame. The crown adjust screw rod ends (4) are attached to the top of the right main screed frame. As the adjust screws rotate in either direction, the rod ends extend or retract. This action forces the tops of the screed frames apart or together, thus flexing the screed plate mounted to the bottom of the frames. In this manner, the control mechanism sets the crown angle.When crown adjust screws (3) are extended, a positive crown angle is generated. When the crown adjust screws are retracted, a negative crown angle is generated.

Left Frame of Main Screed (5) Crown decrease relay (6) Crown increase relayCrown decrease relay (5) and crown increase relay (6) control the rotation direction of the crown adjust motor. When the crown decrease relay is energized, motor rotation retracts the crown adjust screws. When the crown increase relay is energized, motor rotation extends the adjust screws.Crown decrease relay (5) and crown increase relay (6) are controlled by output signals from the screed ECM. The left operator station and right operator station of the screed generate the crown control input signals to the screed ECM to control these relays.Crown angle is measured in percent. The motion of the screed ends determines a positive or negative direction. When the screed ends move downward, the crown angle increases in the positive direction. When the screed ends move upward, the crown angle decreases in a negative direction.When the screed is in a zero-crown condition, the crown angle can be increased to a positive 10-percent or decreased to negative 4-percent crown angle.
