(1) Torque for the nuts that hold the bearing caps to the differential carrier ... 1090 135 N m (800 100 lb ft)(2) Torque for the studs that hold the bearing caps to the differential carrier ... 410 40 N m (300 30 lb ft)(3) Torque for the bolts that hold the bevel gear to the differential case (with lubricant on threads and tightened by hand) ... 435 14 N m (320 10 lb ft)Adjustment For The Differential And Bevel Gear
1. Install the bearings on pinion (5) then install the pinion in the carrier. The pinion must be in a vertical position.2. Assemble cage (6) to the carrier. Use only one half the quantity of bolts with one bolt every second hole around the cage. Do not install seal (7) in cage (6) until after the adjustment is complete, and do not install all the bolts in cage (6) until after the seal is installed.3. Tighten the bolts evenly around the cage (6) to keep the clearance between the cage and carrier approximately the same. Slowly turn the pinion while the bolts are tightened until the pinion bearings have enough preload so that a torque of more than 2.3 N m (20 lb in) is necessary to turn pinion.4. Turn the pinion several revolutions under this preload then measure the gap for an indication of the amount of shims needed.5. Remove cage (6) but do not turn the pinion.6. Install shims (12) as needed between cage (6) and the carrier to adjust the preload on the pinion bearings until a torque of 2.3 .06 N m (20 .5 lb in) is necessary to turn the pinion. If cage (6) must be removed again to add or remove shims, do not turn pinion (5) while the cage is removed.7. When the pinion bearing adjustment is correct, install seal (7) in cage (6) then install all the bolts in the cage and tighten the bolts to the correct torque.8. Install the differential assembly in the carrier.9. Install the bearing caps and nuts. At this time, do not tighten the nuts to full torque.10. Put the carrier in a position so the centerline for the axle is vertical and the ring gear teeth are toward the top.11. Use a dial indicator to measure the backlash between bevel gear (8) and pinion (5) at four points on the bevel gear. Find the average backlash. Turn adjustment ring (11) until the average backlash is 0.36 0.13 mm (.014 .005 in).12. Use a dial indicator to measure the amount of change in dimension (A). Turn adjustment ring (4) to get the maximum preload on carrier bearings, until dimension (A) has an increase of ... 0.18 0.05 mm (.007 .002 in).13. After the adjustments have been made, tighten nuts (1) to a torque of ... 1090 135 N m (800 100 lb ft) 14. After the differential is installed in
