1. For backlash checks only, install a 5/8 in.-11 NC bolt in the hole in the transfer case so that it fits between two of the pinion teeth. Tighten the bolt by hand until the pinion will not move. The bolt must have a minimum of 3.5 in. (89 mm) of threads. A 5P1895 Bolt can be used. Shims (9) are used for an adjustment to the bevel gear and pinion backlash.2. If a new pinion or bevel gear was installed, adjust the backlash (free play) to .014 in. (0.36 mm). If the original pinion and bevel gear is used, use the original thickness of shims (9) also.
Make sure the bolt that holds the pinion in place (for backlash checks) is removed when adjustments are complete.
3. The bevel gear and pinion backlash must be adjusted before the bevel gear shaft bearing end play is adjusted. After the backlash has been adjusted, use two 3P2548 Shim Packs (10) for bevel gear shaft bearing end play adjustment. Do not use the .032 in. (0.81 mm) shims. Adjust the end play to .003 to .011 in. (0.08 to 0.28 mm).
