A new method is used to retain the spanner nut (3) in the axle housing and flange groups in the front axle. The spanner nut is used to hold the wheel bearings. The new method uses a tab washer (2) that is held in position by three bolts (1). A tab on the tab washer engages a slot in the spanner nut in order to prevent the spanner nut from loosening. The former method used a dowel pin that engaged a slot on the spanner nut. The dowel pin was held in position by a spiral retaining ring.Adaptable To:

When you apply 4C-5593 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads and the mating surface of the nut, the proper preload on the bearings will be obtained when you tighten the spanner nut to 800 N m (590.0 lb ft).Note: A 246-5254 Spanner Wrench is available in order to tighten the former 229-5080 Nut. A 230-7923 Spanner Wrench is available in order to tighten the new 226-4366 Nut .Torque the three 226-4370 Self-Locking Bolt to 70 N m (50.0 lb ft).Note: It may be necessary to move the spanner nut slightly in order to get the dowel pin or the three bolts installed.
