Personal injury can result from air pressure.Personal injury can result without following proper procedure. When using pressure air, wear a protective face shield and protective clothing.Maximum air pressure at the nozzle must be less than 205 kPa (30 psi) for cleaning purposes.
Personal injury or death can result from a fire.Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.
Do not fill fuel filter with fuel before installing the fuel filter. Contaminated fuel causes accelerated wear to fuel system parts.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Open the access door. Shut off the fuel supply valve. The valve is located on the left front of the fuel tank.

Open drain valve (3) on water separator bowl (2). Drain into a suitable container. The water separator bowl is under the primary fuel filter.
Remove the primary filter element (1).
Remove the water separator bowl from the primary filter element.
Wash the water separator bowl in a clean nonflammable solvent. Use pressure air to dry the water separator bowl.
Install the clean water separator bowl onto a new primary filter element.
Clean the filter housing base.
Coat the seal of the new primary filter element with clean diesel fuel.
Install the new primary element onto the filter housing. Install the new filter element by hand. When the seal contacts the base, tighten the filter element for an additional 3/4 turn.
Turn on the fuel supply valve.
Close the access door.
