PRIORITY - Product Support Program for removing and cleaning radiator cores and air-to-air aftercooler cores and checking the hydraulic fan system on certain D8T and D9T Track-Type Tractors equipped with Waste Handling or Woodchip arrangements.
MODELS INVOLVED - D8T and D9T Track-Type Tractors
Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
The cooling system on the products listed below with waste handling and woodchip arrangements may experience overheating. The hydraulic fan mounted in front of the radiator, and the hydraulic oil cooler mounted behind the radiator make cleaning the radiator difficult. In landfill and woodchip applications, cleaning with water and not getting the cores completely clean can cause debris to stick and build up and eventually plug the center of the cores. Over time, core plugging increases to the point that cooling is noticeably impaired. After this debris has hardened deep in the cores, complete cleaning of the cores while mounted in the tractor is not possible. Additionally, failures of the fan pump control valve and the fan pump pressure sensor may cause the fan to turn slower than desired.
The radiator cores and air-to-air aftercooler core must be removed from the tractor and thoroughly cleaned. Once these cores are fully cleaned, we then recommend the elimination of water for cleaning during regular maintenance. For the time being, our recommendation is to use only compressed air to maintain core cleanliness. Additionally, the fan control system needs to be checked and adjusted to ensure proper fan performance.
You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
This thorough cleaning and adjustment is an interim action to provide good cooling performance for the remainder of the high ambient temperature season. The build-up of hardened debris in the cores is a condition that develops over time during waste handling and woodchip operations. Therefore, you may have younger tractors in your fleet which are not included in this support program. These tractors will be included in a subsequent support program. We are also preparing permanent changes which should be available in the Spring of 2007. These permanent changes currently include a plan to move the hydraulic oil cooler on the D8T and D9T tractors in an effort to provide easier access for cleaning.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 16Aug2006 when scheduling this service.
We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to have this service performed as soon as possible to prevent unscheduled downtime.
