Rework Procedure
EXTERNAL INSPECTION PROCEDURE:
It is necessary to first perform a preliminary external inspection of the link assembly to determine whether or not disassembly is required.
1. Inspect track for failed or extended joints. A joint with more than 6.35 mm (0.25 inch) pitch extension is considered failed.
2. Joint internal pressure check. Joint pressure can be measured with a tool similar to the one shown in Image 1.1.1. To measure joint pressure, the 6.35 mm (0.25 inch) diameter plastic plug must be partially driven into the rubber stopper no more than 12.70 mm (0.50 inch) deep. The tip of the pressure tool can then be used to push the plug in the rest of the way and record the pressure. Pressure exceeding 103.5 kPa (15 psi) may indicate joint failure. Disassembly of joints having elevated internal pressure will confirm if the joint is failed (see LINK ASSEMBLY REPAIR (Option 1)).

3. Oil level check. Stand the track up on shoe ends, drive in the 6.35 mm (0.25 inch) diameter plastic plug, and insert a small diameter wire or dipstick into the pin to verify at least 76.2 mm (3.0 inch) of oil is present. If less than 76.2 mm (3.0 inch)of oil is present, the joint is considered failed. Extremely thick, paste-like oil is typical of a failed track joint. If oil levels are greater than 76.2 mm (3.0 inch) and the track is to be reused, install new plastic plugs (6Y-0473). Perform this inspection only in a safe, clean shop environment.
4. Joint endplay measurement. Measure endplay using a dial indicator and magnetic base as shown in Image 1.2.1. Endplay should be measured with the track lying flat; either with the rail side down and shoes removed, or with the rail side up if shoes are still installed. If joint endplay is greater than 0.40 mm (0.016 inch), the joint is suspect and should be internally inspected. If joint endplay is greater than 0.60 mm (0.024 inch), the joint is considered failed and does not require internal inspection.

After external inspection, if 11 or more joints per link assembly are failed, the link assembly should be replaced and no disassembly is required. If 10 or less joints per link assembly are failed, the suspect joints should be disassembled, internally inspected, and repaired. If during the disassembly and internal inspection, 11 or more failed joints are found, the determination to replace link assemblies should be made instead of repairing joints.
LINK ASSEMBLY REPAIR (Option 1):
1. Repair individual joints at the dealer track shop using the Undercarrige Reconditioning Bulletin SEBF8546 (Positive Pin Retention) for proper repair procedures. Disassemble only enough of the link assembly to remove failed joints and to inspect suspect joints.
2. Measure the link counterbore wear step under the thrust ring on any link that is disassembled. If the
