Illustration 1. Location of the improvements. In addition, the bevel gear and pinion are now available separately for replacement, and the use of shims permits adjustment of the pinion.
The result of these changes is an increased service life for the bevel and transfer gear group.
Adaptable As: The new 3T4393 Bevel And Transfer Gear Group is in effect on D10 Tractors with Serial Numbers 84W720 and 76X365. The new gear group is a direct replacement for the former 7G63 Bevel And Transfer Gear Group which is canceled. It is adaptable to all earlier D10 Tractors.
Use the procedure that follows for adjustment of the bevel pinion.
Procedure For Bevel Pinion Adjustment
1. Assemble the transfer gear (1) and bevel pinion (3) to the cover (6). The cover (2), retainer (4) and cage (5) must be installed to hold the bearings and bearing cones in the correct location and to prevent movement of the bearing cups and spacer (8) while adjustment is made. See Illustration 2.
Illustration 2. Location of parts for assembly and adjustment.2. Install the cage (5) without the shim pack (7).3. Put the assembled parts on a flat surface so that all of the weight of the parts is on the pinion shaft.4. Put a 19.1 mm (.75") thick spacer (9) under the transfer gear (1) so that the assembled parts will be level.5. Remove the retainer (4). Put six 1P7379 Microgauges in three sets of two each on the end of the pinion shaft as shown in Illustration 3.
Illustration 3. Location of microgauges and dimensions B and C.6. Put a 7H1941 Base (11) from the 8S2328 Dial Indicator Group on top of the microgauges. If the microgauges and base are not available, use a piece of flat bar stock.7. Use the depth micrometer (12) from the 6V2012 Micrometer Depth Gauge Group to measure the distance from the top of the base (11) or (bar stock) to the machined surface of the cover (6). See Illustration 4.
Illustration 4. Use of the base and depth micrometer.8. Write this measurement as dimension X.9. Subtract the total thickness of the base (11) and the microgauges (10), or the bar stock, from dimension X. Write this measurement as dimension A. If the measurements were made in inches, conversion to millimeters is necessary. The conversion is: Inches × 25.4 equals millimeters. Both dimension B given on the cover (6) and dimension C given on the end of the pinion shaft are in millimeters.10. Add dimension A, found in Step 9, to dimension B, given on cover (6) and write the total as dimension D.11. Subtract dimension D from dimension C, given on the end of the pinion shaft. This is the thickness of the shim pack (7) needed under the cage (5) for correct adjustment of the bevel pinion.
