D10 TractorsThe 6V3175 or 5P2998 Hydraulic Puller Assemblies will produce a force of approximately 490 kN (55 tons). This is enough force to remove the final drive bearings. However, it is possible for the bearing to bind (not move freely) during removal. If the puller assembly does not free the bearing, it is possible that the bearing cone will need to be heated with a torch. Heat the cone evenly around its circumference. Do not stop the torch and heat the cone in one place. If the bearing cone is heated in any one place to a temperature above 120°C (249°F), its heat treatment will be destroyed, and a bearing failure is probable if it is used again.
This same procedure must be followed for removal of the final drive bearings on the D8L Tractors. Specific instructions on this procedure and the tooling needed for the removal of the final drive bearings on D8L Tractors can be found in Service Magazine, Form SEBD1303, "New Tools And Procedures For Removal Of Final Drive Bearings And Radiator Guard Pins," January 24, 1983, Page 5. Make a note of this new information in the Disassembly and Assembly section of the appropriate Service Manual.
