Introduction
This Special Instruction provides the necessary information required to replace the 8R8629 Tube Assembly with a 4E7702 Tube Assembly.The 8R8627 Line Group is being updated to minimize damage to the bucket cylinder during normal operation or transportation of the excavator.The 8R8629 Hydraulic Tube Assembly is being replaced by the 4E7702 Hydraulic Tube Assembly and the head end of the hydraulic cylinder is being rotated 90° counterclockwise as viewed from the operators compartment.Do not perform any procedure, outlined in this publication, or order any parts until you read and understand the information contained within.Reference: Operation and Maintenance Manual, Service Manual, Parts Manual, and Service Magazine Article of September 10, 1990 entitled "New Seals and Piston Nuts Used; New Head Bolt and Piston Nut Tightening Torques Used in Excavator Cylinders."Parts Needed
Installation
1. Fully extend the stick, open the bucket, and lower the bucket to the ground. Stop the engine.
Do Not disconnect any oil lines from the bucket cylinder until oil pressure in the bucket cylinder has been released. Refer to the Service Manual for the procedure to release the oil pressure.
2. Disconnect and plug the oil lines connected to the head of the bucket cylinder.3. Remove 8R8629 Tube Assembly. This tube assembly will not be used again.4. Remove the bolt and the rod end pin securing the cylinder.5. Connect a hoist to the cylinder and lift it high enough to provide easy access to the cylinder head.6. Remove the eight cylinder head bolts and washers.7. Rotate the cylinder head 90 degrees counterclockwise (left as viewed from the operator's compartment).8. Install the eight cylinder head bolts and washers removed in Step 5 finger tight.
Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence.9. Tighten the cylinder head bolts to 240 40 N m (178 30 lb ft) in the sequence shown.10. Install 4E7702 Tube Assembly using new 1P3704 Seals.11. Install the cylinder and secure with the bolt and the rod end pin removed in Step 4.12. Connect the oil lines to the head of the bucket cylinder.13. Fill the hydraulic system with oil and purge the air from the lines.
