Parking Brake Components (1) Parking brake actuator. (2) Parking brake.Parking brake (2) is located in the drive line on the nonengine end of the machine. When the oil pressure in the brake system drops below a given pressure, the compression of the spring in parking brake actuator (1) will become stronger than the pressure of the oil. This causes parking brake actuator (1) to engage the parking brake. The force of the spring in the actuator is transferred through a mechanical linkage and a lever.

Parking Brake Controls (3) Parking brake indicator. (4) Parking brake control knob. The operator can also engage the parking brake by pulling out on parking brake control knob (4). Parking brake control knob (4) is located to the right of the steering column on the dashboard.A normally closed pressure switch is located on the parking brake control valve. The pressure switch signals the power train electronic control module (ECM), and the Caterpillar Monitoring System when the parking brake engages. When the parking brake engages, the switch activates parking brake indicator (3) on the dashboard. The pressure switch also causes the transmission to shift to the NEUTRAL position if the transmission is in FORWARD position or if the transmission is in REVERSE position. This will occur when the parking brake engages.

Parking Brake (5) Drive shaft. (6) Cage. (7) Drum. (8) Brake group. (9) Lever. (10) Yoke.As drive shaft (5) rotates, drum (7) and yoke (10) also rotate. Brake group (8) and lever (9) are fastened to cage (6), which remains stationary. When the parking brake is engaged, lever (9) moves. This actuates brake group (8). Brake group (8) consists of three retraction springs and two shoes that are mounted on a plate assembly. The brake assembly operates in the following manner. When lever (9) is actuated the plate assembly expands. The brake shoes press against drum (7). This prevents drive shaft (5) and yoke (10) from turning.
