Information:
EngineC7.1 (S/N: 8811-UP)There have been instances of issues with the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) that result in low NOx conversion event codes being displayed. The event codes that may be displayed are listed below:
4364-18 Aftertreatment #1 SCR Catalyst Conversion Efficiency : Low - moderate severity (2)
5298-17 Aftertreatment #1 Diesel Oxidation Catalyst Conversion Efficiency : Low - least severe (1)The most likely cause of this issue is that the diesel fuel that is used has a sulfur content that exceeds the recommend specification. For the correct specification of fuel, refer to Cat Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations, SEBU6251 for more information. If the event codes that are listed above are being displayed, or there are any issues that are associated with the aftertreatment, Caterpillar recommends that regular fuel samples are obtained. The fuel sample should be analyzed for sulfur levels.Excessive levels of sulfur in the diesel fuel will lead to DOC deactivation and a deterioration in the Clean Emissions Module (CEM) performance and life. In extreme cases, the DOC within the CEM may move and the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) may crack. If the DOC has moved, or there is damage to the DPF, this requires the complete replacement of the CEM.The movement of the DOC and cracks in the DPF can be determined by inspecting the soot antennae. Refer to Special Instruction, M0077352, Soot Antennae Check for C7.1 Engines for more information.
