MODIFICATION:
Machines in the field equipped with the former 7N1384 Muffler Assembly can have the same type of sealing for the rear of the muffler without a complete muffler replacement. Field repair parts are available and can be installed according to the instructions that follow:
1. Assemble a 7N9974 Clamp Assembly. Bend each of the clamps into an oval shape as shown in Illustration 1. Make sure all of the bolts go through the clamp flanges in the same direction.
Illustration 1. Shape of clamp assemblies after they are bent.
Illustration 2. Installation of cover into clamp assembly.2. Push a 7N9872 Muffler Cover Assembly into the clamp assembly until you get the approximate dimension shown in Illustration 2.
Illustration 3. Location of gaskets.3. Push the cover and clamp assembly over the inlet end of the muffler until the cover makes contact with the curled (bent) end of the outer body. Do not use force to push the cover over the end of the muffler. The nuts on the bolts must be on the top side of the muffler. This makes it easier to tighten the nuts. Keep the cover in place and adjust the clamp assembly so it is in the same position as it was at the end of Step 2. After the cover and clamp assembly are in place, install the gaskets between the clamps, bolts and muffler as shown in Illustration 3. The gaskets in Step 3 and in Illustration 3 are of the rolled metal-foil type and are a part of the hardware for the clamp assembly.4. Tighten the nuts on both sides several turns at a time. Do not turn the bolts as this can cause thread damage. Tighten every other nut until all the nuts on both sides are tight. The nuts can be tightened with a hand wrench or with an impact wrench. Tighten the nuts to a torque of 100 lb ft (135 N m). When tightened completely, the clamp flanges must be completely closed and the metal-foil gaskets must be pushed out at the joints (junctions).
