Information:

For good welding results, use the recommendations that follow: 1. It is best to weld the roller when it is worn almost to its wear limit. Do not weld the roller if it is worn less than 80% or more than 120% of wear limit. Remove all cracked and loose material from the surface to be welded.2. There must be no rust, moisture or foreign material on the surface to be welded. The wire and flux must be dry and must not have any foreign material.3. The welding machine must be in a location that is free from drafts (air movement) and rapid temperature changes. Drafts and temperature changes can have a bad effect on the weld result.4. When weld material is put at the junction of the treads and flanges, it must connect them smoothly and with no gaps.
New rim assembly. Note that the weld is not exactly in the center of the rim assembly and that there is a small gap in the bore.If the weld equipment that is used makes it necessary to disassemble the roller, the following additional recommendations must be used.
1. Before the welding is started, the rim assembly must be at room temperature. In cold weather areas or if you have had cracking problems on welded rollers, heat it to 400°F (200°C) before the welding is started.2. After application of one layer of weld, let the rim assembly become cool to 400°F (200°C) but not less than 300°F (150°C). Never put the rim assembly in drafts or on the floor after application of any layer of weld. When welding is complete, let the rim assembly become cool slowly until it is at room temperature.3. Normally, the bore of the rim assembly on through-hardened rollers will not shrink (become smaller) during the welding. If the bore does shrink, a boring bar, hone or grinder must be used to machine the bore. The best method is to use a boring bar with a carbide-tipped cutting tool.If the Stoody "Roll-Rite" Welder is used, Caterpillar's recommendation is to add a recirculating preheated water system to the welder. Information on this attachment is available from Stoody Company. If this water system is attached to the welder, use the recommendations that follow: 1. Keep water temperature to the roller at appoximately 150°F (65°C) during welding.2. Before the welding is started, let the water flow through the roller. When the roller feels warm, the welding can be started.3. Do not stop until the weld is complete. When you start to weld on either tread, you must weld constantly until the tread and flange have been rebuilt to the correct dimension.4. When the roller has cooled slowly to room temperature, put lubricant in the roller.
If you have the Wolff "Model W" Welder, use the recommendations that follow: 1. During cold weather, the roller must be at room temperature before the welding is started.2. Keep water temperature to the roller at approximately 150°F (65°C) during welding.3. Weld on both tread surfaces
