INSPECT PARTS STOCKS OF 8P4541 CARRIERS (988B LOADERS) AND TWO FINAL DRIVE GEARS (D8L, D9L) U-11 A-9 AU-8 B-6 C-10 E-9 O-9 optional There are two PIP's in this Service Letter. Both are classified "OPTIONAL" because there are no serial numbers and therefore preprinted claims are not applicable. However, all parts stocks of the three parts must be inspected. Inspect 8P4541 Carriers In Parts Stocks - 988B Loaders 3100 PI7081 Problem Some parts stocks of 8P4541 Carriers for use in 988B Loaders may not be satisfactory. These carriers may have an excessive undercut next to the thrust bearing surface. This could cause the thrust bearing to have short life. Action Requested Inspect all parts stocks of 8P4541 Carriers. Measure dimension (X) by the undercut area. If (X) exceeds 5.08 mm (0.200"), remove the carrier from stock and order another one. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Warranty Allowances Submit one claim for all unsatisfactory carriers. Type "PI7081" in the claim box labeled "Part No. Causing Failure." Parts Disposition Dispose of the defective carriers in accordance with the Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts disposition. When the carriers are scrapped, make each one unusable by cutting it into two pieces. Termination Date July 31, 1984. Inspect Parts Of Two Final Drive Gears For D8L, D9L Tractors 4055 PI7077 Problem Some 9P3454 Gears for use in the D8L Tractor final drive may be incorrectly identified as 8P7322 Gears. The 8P7322 Gears are for the D9L Tractor final drives. The 9P3454 Gears are now stamped with the correct part number. No incorrect gears were installed in tractors. Action Requested Inspect your parts stocks and users' stocks of both gears by measuring the overall diameter. See Illustration. The overall diameters of the gears are listed in the following table: Model Major Diameter Part No. D8L 155.14 mm (6.1 in) 9P3454 D9L 173.03 mm (6.8 in) 8P7322 (SEE ILLUSTRATION) All dealers, except U.S. and Canadian, are to grind off the part number if wrong and stamp on the correct part number. Reuse the gears. U.S. and Canadian dealers should remove from stocks any gears with the wrong part numbers. Warranty Allowances U.S. and Canadian dealers should submit one claim for all gears incorrectly identified. Other dealers should not submit a claim. Parts Disposition U.S. and Canadian dealers should return any gears with the wrong part number to the Pioneer Park Claims Building, attention: J. T. Duke. Send the factory Service
