Check the rotor drum coolant level only after the fill plug is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Pressure in the rotor drum can cause hot coolant and steam to spray outward when the plug is removed.Steam and hot coolant can cause personal injury and burns.The rotor drum plug must be removed slowly in order to relieve pressure.
When the rotor is at operating temperature, the rotor coolant is hot. The coolant is also under pressure. Any contact with hot coolant or with steam can cause severe burns. Allow rotor to cool before the coolant level is checked or the coolant is drained. Ensure that the fill plug is cool before removing the plug. The plug must be cool enough to touch with a bare hand. Remove the plug slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Alkali can cause personal injury. Do not allow alkali to contact the skin, the eyes, or the mouth.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Park the machine in a smooth surface, and raise the machine to service height.
Install the Service Support (Leg Locks).
Raise the rotor service door and secure door using the latch locking device provided.

Turn off the engine.
Use the rotor turning device to rotate the rotor to a position that filler plug (1) is at about 90 degrees from the top, or at 3 o'clock.
Unscrew filler plug (1) and check that the coolant level is just below the edge of the hole. If necessary, top off the fluid level.
Install filler plug (1) and close the moldboard.
Lower the rotor service door.
Remove the service support (leg locks).
