AWD control dial position sensor circuit This diagnostic code is associated with the all wheel drive (AWD) control dial position sensor. FMI 04 means that the ECM has determined that the AWD control dial position sensor signal is below the normal range.The position sensor is a PWM sensor that operates at a frequency of approximately 500 Hz. The duty cycle of the sensor operates from a range of 3% to 97%. The possible causes of this failure are listed below:
Failed position sensor
Sensor signal circuit shorted to ground
Sensor requires calibration
Failed ECM.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected.Note: Use a calibrated 146-4080 Digital Multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.System Response:The diagnostic code CID 2194 FMI 04 will be logged in the AWD ECM internal memory.Test Step 1. INSPECT THE SENSOR
Perform a visual inspection of the sensor, the sensor wiring, and the hardware associated with the sensor.Expected Result:The sensor, wiring, and hardware are in good condition.Results:
OK - The sensor, wiring, and hardware are in good condition. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The sensor, wiring, and hardware are not in good condition.Repair: Replace the damaged part. Proceed to Test Step 7.Test Step 2. CHECK FOR POWER AT THE SENSORNote: Do not disconnect the harness connector from the sensor.
At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert a 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe along the voltage supply wire contact A.
Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.
Measure the voltage from contact A to frame ground.Expected Result:The voltage is 24 V.Results:
OK - The voltage is 24 V. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The voltage is not 24 V. Repair: Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK FOR PROPER GROUND AT THE SENSORThe harness remains connected to the sensor.
Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.
Remove the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe from the voltage supply wire contact A.
At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert a 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe along the ground wire contact B.
Measure the resistance from contact B to frame ground.Expected Result:The resistance is less than 5 ohms.Results:
OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms. The ground circuit in the harness has failed.Repair: Replace or repair the harness.STOPTest Step 4. CHECK THE SIGNAL OF THE SENSOR
Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.
At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, remove the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe from contact A.
Insert the probe along the signal wire contact C.
At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe along the ground wire contact B.
Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.
Monitor the sensor signal with the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter .
Without disconnecting the sensor or the hardware associated with the sensor from the machine, take the sensor through the full operating range of the sensor.Expected
